This particular work by artist-mentor Sharmila Samant is a video project titled Global Clones (1998). This video projection is done on the floor using 18 pairs of traditional footwear cutting across the globe.
The video encapsulates a host of shoes ranging from the Kohlapuri chappal from India to the Dutch clogs from Amsterdam as part of the journey. The video proceeds with each pair simulating on to the other in the course of its progression. The video interestingly shows the placement of a branded pair of sneakers as a way of the artist’s commentary on the corporate, consumer and consumption culture of the times. Using the allegory of shoes, the artist brings into focus issues surrounding displacement and identity.
