Shh! Four friends have a plan to catch a “birdie” they spot in the woods. But it is hilarious to see how their plans turn into falling, splashing, and running!
With a minimalist text, aided by a judiciously selective use of colour, Haughton entertainingly relates (verbally and visually) the adventures of a group of hapless creatures intent on becoming bird-catchers.
Collage and silhouette are employed effectively to enhance the comedy of a situation where, in spite of all the plans in the world, success in capturing the little coloured bird remains elusive. Shadows and shades of blue play on the page creating a silly mood and energy. Those eyes! They say it all!
Plus “Shhhh” is the perfect read aloud sound and word.
