The Art1st Approach to NEP 2020

The National Education Policy 2020 is the first education policy of the 21st century and aims to address the many growing developmental imperatives of our country. The NEP 2020 lays particular emphasis on the development of the creative potential of each individual. It is based on the principle that education must develop not only cognitive capacities – both the ‘foundational capacities ’of literacy and numeracy and ‘higher-order’ cognitive capacities, such as critical thinking and problem-solving – but also social, ethical, and emotional capacities and dispositions. 

Education moves away from rote and regimented learning and must be focused on building the critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities of students as well as creative thinking processes. Students should have access to a multi-disciplinary experience and learn how to innovate, adapt and absorb new material. 

Pedagogy must evolve to be experiential and holistic using inquiry-driven and discussion and discovery-driven approaches, keeping the focus on the learner. Equal weightage must be given to all subjects from Arts, Humanities, Sports and fitness as well as literature, language, and values.

Art Integrated learning which is education through the arts, where learning takes place using different art forms in the teaching-learning process, is a multi-dimensional approach that offers an approach to address the NEP 2020’s most pressing concerns.

To further this learning, Art1st offered the first Arts Integrated Learning Workshop for Principals. Through a hands-on experience of art-integration, Principals experimented with the various processes required for implementation, engaged in deep discussions on Arts Integrated Learning, the context, philosophy, process, and practice and had a robust debate on the Arts Integration Continuum. The continuum maps the levels of Arts Integration from Enhancement; where art is used to support or in service of another lesson or subject as opposed to true Integration where the lesson is co-planned by two content teachers and is grounded equitably by teaching and assessing standards in both areas. 

Key takeaways from the workshop for the Principals were, strategies, processes, and approaches to take Arts Integration work forward in their schools, how to assess the capabilities of their subject teachers and art teachers to conduct AIL sessions as well as evaluate the effectiveness of this program for their students. Principals moved forward with a roadmap for the implementation of Arts-integrated education in their school.
